Abstract
Hypertension is a degenerative disease that is often suffered by older people. Older people with hypertension often require long-term care in managing blood pressure to avoid complications. Chronic disease and complex management often have an impact on the quality of life of older people. Families have an important role in assisting older people with hypertension to improve their quality of life. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between family support and the quality of life of older people with hypertension. The method used in this study was correlation analytic with a cross-sectional approach. The population in this study were older people suffering from hypertension in the working area of Puskesmas IV South Denpasar. The number of samples in this study were 110 respondents who were taken with convenience sampling technique. The research instruments used were a family support questionnaire (cronbach’s alpha 0.628) and a quality of life questionnaire (cronbach’s alpha 0.880). The results showed that most older people had good family support (69 respondents/62.7%) and most hypertensive older people had a good quality of life (70 respondents/63.6%). The results of the analysis of the Spearman Rho correlation coefficient calculation were 0.663 with a p value <0.001. This means, there was a strong relationship between family support and the quality of life of older people with hypertension. The better the family support, the better the quality of life of older people. Families need to increase family support, especially in the information domain for older people who have poor quality of life.
