Abstract

Background: The postpartum period is a critical phase vulnerable to mental health disorders, particularly postpartum depression (PPD). The prevalence of PPD in Indonesia ranges from 22–57%, significantly higher than the global average of 10–15%. Limited maternal knowledge and lack of social support are identified as primary risk factors. Peer group education is a community-based intervention considered effective in improving knowledge and mental health status among postpartum mothers.

Objective: To determine the effect of peer group education on knowledge and mental health of postpartum mothers in the working area of Denpasar City. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group design. A total of [n] respondents were selected using purposive sampling and divided into an intervention group (n=[n1]) and a control group (n=[n2]). The intervention group received four sessions of peer group education (±60–90 minutes/session), while the control group received standard care. Data were collected using a knowledge questionnaire and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Statistical analysis included paired t-test, independent t-test, and linear regression at a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: A significant increase in mean knowledge scores was observed in the intervention group following peer group education. Mean EPDS scores in the intervention group decreased significantly post-intervention. Significant differences were found between the intervention and control groups in both knowledge score changes 0,01 (p < 0.05) and EPDS score changes 0,00 (p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis confirmed peer group education as an independent predictor of improved knowledge and mental health outcomes, after controlling for family support and educational level. Conclusion: Peer group education significantly improves knowledge and mental health status of postpartum mothers. This method is recommended for integration into postnatal care programs at primary healthcare facilities as a community-based promotive-preventive intervention.
